Ask any Malayali family about kalyanam and age, and you'll hear two worries, sometimes in the same breath. One is that the girl is studying too long and “the age is going”. The other is that the boy is over thirty and still no alliance has worked out. Both worries are about the same thing: people in Kerala are marrying later than their parents did.
This guide sets out what the law actually says about the minimum age for marriage in Kerala, where the proposal to raise women's age to 21 stands, what the latest official data shows about the average marriage age, and what's been reported about Kerala's unmarried men and women. It ends with practical advice for anyone searching at 28, 32 or 35. It's general information, not legal advice.
The legal minimum age for marriage in Kerala
Kerala follows the national law. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, the minimum age of marriage is 21 for men and 18 for women. PRS Legislative Research notes these limits go back to a 1978 amendment of the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929, which had first set them at 14 for girls and 18 for boys. The 2006 Act replaced the 1929 Act and kept the same ages.
The marriage laws themselves say the same thing:
- Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, section 5(iii): the bridegroom must have completed 21 years and the bride 18 years at the time of the marriage.
- Special Marriage Act, 1954, section 4(c): the civil route used by many interfaith couples. The male must have completed 21 and the female 18.
Under the 2006 Act, someone married below the minimum age can apply to have the marriage annulled within two years of reaching majority, that is, before turning 20.
In practice, child marriage is now very rare in Kerala. In the SRS Statistical Report 2024, published by the Registrar General of India, just 0.04% of women in Kerala who married did so before 18, one of the lowest shares among the bigger states. About 19.4% married between 18 and 20, and 80.6% married at 21 or older.
When you register your marriage with the local body, you'll be asked for proof of age for both of you, such as an SSLC book or passport. Our guide to marriage registration in Kerala walks through the documents.
Is the marriage age for women going up to 21?
This is one of the most searched questions, and the honest answer is: not yet, as far as the public record shows.
The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on 21 December 2021. It would raise the minimum age of marriage for women to 21, the same as men, and say that the Act overrides any other law, custom, usage or practice. It would also extend the window to annul a child marriage from two years after majority to five (up to age 23).
On the same day, it was referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports. As of October 2026, PRS Legislative Research still lists the bill's status as “In Committee”. We couldn't find an official record of it being passed, so until Parliament changes the law, the ages in the 2006 Act stand: 18 for women and 21 for men.
PRS's analysis also sets out the debate around the bill. The age of majority in India is 18, and the Supreme Court has held that the right to marry is part of the right to life under Article 21. Raising the age to 21 would mean adults between 18 and 21 could not legally marry, and PRS asks whether that's a reasonable restriction. It also points out that about a quarter of women aged 20 to 24 nationally had married before 18 even though 18 has been the legal minimum since 1978. On the other side, the bill's own statement of objects and reasons argues the change would improve maternal and infant health, nutrition and women's participation in work.
Kerala's average marriage age, then and now
Kerala is consistently among the states where women marry latest. Here's what the official data and reporting show.
| Measure | Figure | Source and year |
|---|---|---|
| Mean age at effective marriage, women, Kerala | 24.5 years | SRS Statistical Report 2024 |
| Same measure, Kerala, 2014 | 23.8 years | Onmanorama's analysis of SRS reports, 2014 to 2024 |
| Mean age at effective marriage, women, Kerala (rural / urban) | 23.8 / 25.1 years | SRS 2024 |
| Mean age at effective marriage, women, all India | 23.1 years | SRS 2024 |
| Women aged 15+ in Kerala who have never married | 20.4% (lowest among bigger states) | SRS 2024 |
| Same share, Kerala, 2014 | 15.7% | Onmanorama's analysis of SRS reports |
| Average age at marriage, men, Kerala | 27.3 years (national average 23.2) | Registrar General of India data, reported by Onmanorama in June 2016 |
A few things are worth knowing about these numbers.
- The SRS only publishes a mean marriage age for women. There's no recent official figure for Kerala men in the 2024 report. The 27.3 figure for men is from a decade ago, from a Registrar General survey reported in 2016, and it measured something slightly different from the SRS series. The same 2016 report put Kerala women at 21.4, so don't compare it directly with the 24.5 above.
- “Never married” is not the same as “single by choice”. The 20.4% counts every woman aged 15 and over who has never married, including students in their late teens. Onmanorama's analysis found most of the rise from 15.7% happened between 2014 and 2018, and the share has hovered around 20% since.
- The real age may be higher than the average. A matrimonial site manager told Onmanorama in 2026 that in her experience the age is “mostly 26 or even 27” now. That's one person's view from the industry, not data, but it matches what many families notice.
“It's important for me to find someone who matches me intellectually, politically and emotionally.”
Sophia Grace Joy, a 25-year-old Kochi-based psychologist, to Onmanorama (Aug 2026)
The “bachelor” worry: Kerala's unmarried men
While the official numbers mostly track women, much of the anxiety in Kerala homes is about men. Two widely shared reports shaped that conversation.
In October 2019, a pastoral letter from Mar Joseph Perumthottam, Archbishop of Changanacherry, was read out in churches during Sunday mass. As reported by The News Minute, it claimed that “over one lakh Christian grooms above the age of 30 under the Syro-Malabar Church are unable to find life partners”. The letter said its figures came from the church's parish registers. It's important to read this as the church's claim, not census data. We haven't seen the underlying numbers published, and no government survey we found counts unmarried men by community this way.
A year earlier, in November 2018, Gulf News reported on a meeting in Madikai, near Neeleswaram in Kasaragod, organised to find brides for local single men, many of them past 30. The paper noted that it was attended more by women looking for brides for their brothers or sons.
The reasons people give
Nobody has measured the causes precisely, but the same explanations come up again and again in the reporting:
- An education gap. Participants at the Madikai meeting pointed to an education-fuelled rise in women's social status, and Gulf News described women as choosier about partners as their opportunities grew.
- Young people leaving. The 2019 pastoral letter said many young people were leaving the country for jobs, that “most Christian youths are NRIs”, and that many homes now had only elderly parents. Onmanorama's 2026 report cited a Centre for Public Policy Research study finding that 74% of students going abroad from Kerala are women.
- Farming in decline. Gulf News reported that women seemed to be turning down grooms from agriculture after commodity price crashes, and that a Kanjirapally diocese publication had raised the number of bachelors in Idukki. The pastoral letter also said rubber, fisheries and small industries were in crisis.
- Different expectations of marriage. Women interviewed by Onmanorama in 2026 talked about wanting a partner whose plans fit theirs, and a gender studies academic at the University of Calicut said caring and household duties still fall mostly on women, which makes many cautious.
Put simply, many women have changed what they want from a marriage faster than the traditional search process has changed. That's not anyone's fault, but it does mean the old approach of matching on family, job and horoscope alone works less well than it used to.
If you're searching at 28 to 35
If you're reading this because you, or your son or daughter, are past the age the family expected, here's the plain truth from the numbers: you're not unusual. In Kerala's towns and cities, the average woman marries at about 25, and many marry later. A man of 32 or a woman of 30 is squarely within the range of people actively looking. Some practical thoughts:
- Stop treating age as a deadline and start treating it as information. At 30 you know more about how you want to live than you did at 23: where you'll work, whether you'll move abroad, how you'll share money and housework. Use that. It makes for better matches.
- Talk about the life, not just the profile. The reasons people report for marrying later are mostly about mismatched plans. Ask early about where you'll live, children, careers and how household work will be shared. Our list of questions to ask before an arranged marriage is a good starting point.
- Widen one filter at a time. If the search has stalled for a year, it's usually because the filters are too tight. Look at which ones really matter: same district, same community, a narrow age band, a particular job. Loosening one can change everything.
- For parents: let them lead the conversations. Many people in their thirties want their family involved, but not running the search. Offering help without pressure tends to work better than reminding them of their age.
- Be kind to yourself. Comments at weddings and family functions can sting. Remember that one in five women aged 15 and over in the state has never married, and many men are in the same position. You are in good company.

Book a seatQuestions people ask
- What is the legal marriage age in Kerala in 2026?
- 18 for women and 21 for men, under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and the Special Marriage Act, 1954 set the same ages. Kerala doesn't have a separate state limit.
- Has the marriage age for girls been raised to 21?
- Not as of October 2026. The Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which would raise it to 21, was referred to a Parliamentary Standing Committee in December 2021, and PRS Legislative Research still lists it as “In Committee”.
- What is the average marriage age in Kerala?
- For women, the mean age at effective marriage was 24.5 years in the SRS Statistical Report 2024 (23.8 in rural areas and 25.1 in urban areas), up from 23.8 in 2014. The SRS doesn't publish a figure for men. The most recent widely reported figure for Kerala men, 27.3, dates from 2016.
- How many women in Kerala are unmarried?
- According to the SRS 2024 report, 20.4% of women aged 15 and over in Kerala have never married. That's the lowest share among India's bigger states, though it has risen from 15.7% in 2014.
- Are there really over a lakh unmarried men in Kerala?
- That figure comes from a 2019 pastoral letter of the Changanacherry Archdiocese, which claimed over one lakh Syro-Malabar Christian men above 30 couldn't find partners. It's a claim based on parish registers, not government data, and we haven't seen the underlying numbers published.
- What happens if someone marries below the legal age?
- Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, a person married below the minimum age can apply to annul the marriage within two years of reaching majority. This is general information; for a specific situation, speak to a lawyer.
- Is 30 too late to get married in Kerala?
- No. Kerala women already marry at about 25 on average, later in cities, and many men marry in their late twenties or thirties. What matters more than age is finding someone whose plans for where to live, work, children and family fit with yours.
