If you're getting married in a church in Kerala, sooner or later someone will ask, “Have you done the course?” The pre-marriage course, or vivaha orukka course as many dioceses call it, is a short programme of classes that most churches expect couples to finish before the wedding. The certificate you get at the end goes to your parish along with the rest of the marriage paperwork.

It's easy to treat it as one more box to tick in an already crowded year. But the couples who get the most out of it are usually the ones who go in curious. This guide explains who asks for the course, what it usually looks like, the 2026 dates we could find, how NRIs can manage it from abroad, and what to do if you want premarital counselling outside the church. Rules are set by each diocese and parish, not by one central body, so treat everything here as a starting point and confirm with your vikari (parish priest).

Who needs a pre-marriage course

The pre-marriage course is a church requirement. Each church, and often each diocese within it, runs its own course and sets its own rules. Here is what the sources we checked show.

  • Syro-Malabar Catholic. Dioceses run their own courses through a Family Apostolate department. The Diocese of Mananthavady publishes a full 2026 calendar, and the Syro-Malabar eparchies in Australia and Great Britain run courses for Malayali Catholics living there.
  • Roman Catholic (Latin) dioceses. The Diocese of Kannur, for example, takes online registrations for its marriage preparation course and asks for a letter from your parish priest.
  • Syro-Malankara Catholic. The church's eparchy in the USA and Canada says plainly that taking its marriage preparation course is obligatory for marriage in the church. In Kerala, the Catholic Archdiocese of Thiruvalla lists a marriage preparation course among its Family Apostolate activities.
  • Jacobite Syrian Christian. Pre-marital counselling programmes in the Jacobite Syrian church are credited to Mor Themotheos (Timotheos Thomas), who started them in his own diocese before they were implemented across the whole church.
  • Malankara Orthodox. The Orthodox Diocese of UK, Europe and Africa ran its pre-marital counselling programme four times between April 2025 and March 2026. We couldn't find a published rule for Kerala's Orthodox dioceses, so ask your parish.

If one of you belongs to a different church, or to no church, ask both parishes early. Which course counts, and whether you can take it together, is something your priest decides, not a website. If you'd rather not marry in a church at all, a civil marriage needs no course: see our guide to interfaith marriage under the Special Marriage Act.

What the course usually looks like

The Kerala diocesan courses we found run as three-day residential programmes. You stay at a pastoral centre, attend classes through the day, and go home with a certificate on the last afternoon. Two dioceses publish enough detail to show what that means in practice.

Diocese of Kannur

Kannur's registration page asks you to fill in an online form and then bring three things to the course: a letter from your parish priest, one passport-size photo, and what you need for a three-day stay, such as a bed sheet and toiletries. The camp is held at IRC Pariyaram. As of 28 October 2026, the only course listed on the form is on 6 December 2026. The form has a field for an advance payment, but the page doesn't state the fee, so call the numbers listed there before you pay.

Diocese of Mananthavady

Mananthavady, a Syro-Malabar diocese covering Wayanad and nearby areas, publishes its whole year. Its courses are held at the Dwaraka Pastoral Centre, with two batches listed at Manimooly.

The conditions, published in Malayalam on the diocese's site, are a useful picture of what to expect elsewhere too:

  • Booking by phone. You print the application form, call the Family Apostolate office (10am to 5pm, closed on Sundays) to get a serial number, and fill in the rest. A WhatsApp message to the same number also works.
  • The vicar's signature. The form needs your photo and your parish vicar's signature and seal, and you bring it with you.
  • Fee. ₹2,500 in total. ₹500 is paid as soon as you get your serial number and isn't refundable; the remaining ₹2,000 is paid when you arrive. If you tell the office at least three days before, you can move to another course.
  • Timings. Registration starts at 9am on the first day, and the course ends at 5pm on the third.
  • Parents attend too. On the last day there's a class for parents from 2.15pm to 4.45pm, which they're required to attend. If they genuinely can't, you bring a letter from your vicar.
  • Phones. Mobile phones aren't allowed, except at a fixed time each day.
  • Certificate. Only those who attend all three days are eligible for the certificate.

Fees, dates and rules differ between dioceses. Ask your parish which course they accept, and book once you have a rough wedding date.

Online and overseas options for NRIs

If you work in the Gulf, Europe, Australia or North America, you may not be able to take three days off in Kerala before the wedding week. Several dioceses abroad run their own courses for Malayali Catholics and Orthodox Christians living there, and some have done them online.

  • Syro-Malabar, Australia. The Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle, Melbourne, ran an online course over Zoom in August 2021: two weekday evenings and a Saturday morning, for a fee of A$200. Participants had to attend every session on all three days to get the certificate, there was an online evaluation at the end, and the certificate was valid for two years. The form also asks for your diocese and parish in India and the parish of the wedding. That form is from 2021, so check with the eparchy for current courses and whether they're still online.
  • Syro-Malabar, Great Britain. The Eparchy of Great Britain runs a three-day residential course at Savio House near Macclesfield, Thursday to Saturday, for £250 per person including dormitory stay and food. The 2026-27 batches start on 29-31 October, 19-21 November and 3-5 December 2026, then run monthly until June 2027. You bring a passport-size photo, a copy of your passport's photo page, and a letter from the Syro-Malabar priest in charge of your parish or mission in the UK. The certificate is issued to those who attend in full.
  • Syro-Malankara Catholic, USA and Canada. The eparchy's course is obligatory for marriage in the church, and its certificate of participation is valid for five years.
  • Malankara Orthodox, UK, Europe and Africa. In 2025-26 the diocese ran its pre-marital counselling programme as one-day online sessions in June, October, February and March, with about 120 participants over the year.

Before you sign up abroad, ask the parish in Kerala where you'll marry whether they'll accept that certificate. It's your vikari who decides. If you're marrying someone who lives abroad, our guide to marrying an NRI covers the other checks worth making.

The certificate, and when to take the course

At the end you get a course certificate, which you hand to your parish with your other documents before the wedding. Two things to keep in mind:

  • Attendance is everything. Every course we found that mentions the certificate gives it only to people who attend in full. Missing an afternoon can mean repeating the course.
  • It expires. The Syro-Malabar Australia certificate was valid for two years; the Syro-Malankara Catholic one in North America for five. If you take the course early and the wedding moves, check it's still valid.

None of the sources we checked says exactly how many weeks before the wedding to take it. In practice, aim to finish a few months ahead, so the certificate is in hand before your parish needs it and there's time to retake a batch if something goes wrong. Your parish office will tell you its own deadline.

One thing the course certificate is not: it isn't your marriage certificate. After the wedding you still need to register the marriage with the local body. Our guide to marriage registration in Kerala explains how.

Premarital counselling outside the church

Not everyone marrying in Kerala marries in a church, and plenty of couples who do want something more personal than a group class. There are two broad options.

Government-supported courses through colleges

Kerala's Directorate of Minority Welfare has supported premarital counselling courses run by colleges with the Coaching Centres for Minority Youth. In the 2020-21 academic year, for example, the minority cell of MES Ponnani College organised a four-day free premarital counselling certificate course in two batches under the Directorate. About 80 students registered, and the eight sessions covered an introduction to marriage, the husband-wife relationship, sexual health, financial management, marriage and other relationships, parenting, legal aspects and social problems.

More recently, MES Kalladi College in Mannarkkad held a three-day programme called “Pathway” from 22 to 24 January 2025 with the Coaching Centre for Minority Youth, Palakkad, sponsored by the Department of Minority Welfare. It covered communication, in-law relationships and conflict, legal and religious aspects of marriage, family budgeting and parenting.

These courses were organised for students at those colleges, and we couldn't confirm whether a course is open to the public, or running, in 2026. If you're interested, ask the minority cell of a college near you or your nearest Coaching Centre for Minority Youth.

Counselling with a professional

You can also see a counsellor or psychologist together, privately. A few sessions before the wedding can help with things a group class can't, such as a specific worry about family, money, or a past relationship. Look for someone with recognised qualifications, ask about fees upfront, and choose someone you both feel comfortable with.

What to talk through, with or without a course

The courses we looked at cover much the same ground: how you'll communicate, how you'll handle money, in-laws and conflict, faith, sexual health, children and the law. A course gives you a structure, but the real work is the conversations the two of you have afterwards. Some to start with:

  • Where you'll live, and for how long. With parents, near them, in another city, abroad.
  • Money. Who earns, who saves, what you'll send home to each family, and any debts.
  • Children. Whether, when, and how many, and what happens if it doesn't go to plan.
  • Faith in everyday life. Sunday Qurbana, prayer at home, and how you'll raise children.
  • Family. How often you'll visit, how you'll decide things when your parents disagree, and what you'd each need from the other in that moment.
  • Disagreements. How each of you behaves when you're upset, and what helps you calm down.

Our list of questions to ask before an arranged marriage goes further, and works just as well for couples who've known each other for years.

Starting those conversations earlier

A pre-marriage course comes after the decision has been made, when the date is fixed and the hall is booked. It's a good time to talk, but not the easiest time to discover you disagree about something big. Ourpoint is built so those conversations start at the very beginning.

On an Ourpoint Live evening, you have six five-minute text chats with verified people, one at a time. Each chat opens with a question for the two of you, so the talk starts with who you are and the life you want rather than small talk. After each chat you privately say yes or no, and only a mutual yes goes further. You can read how it works in full.

The first Ourpoint Live evening is in Kochi. Joining and the evening are free; you pay only to open a conversation after a mutual yes, from ₹199, with no subscription.

Questions people ask

Is a pre-marriage course compulsory in Kerala?
For a church wedding, usually yes. It's a requirement set by churches, and each diocese or parish runs its own course and rules. Catholic dioceses, including Syro-Malabar, Latin and Syro-Malankara ones, run courses for couples marrying in church. Jacobite and Orthodox churches also run pre-marital counselling programmes. Ask your parish priest what your church requires.
How long is the pre-marriage course in Kerala?
The Kerala diocesan courses we found run for three days, with a residential stay. The Diocese of Mananthavady's course starts at 9am on day one and ends at 5pm on day three, with a class for parents on the last afternoon. The Diocese of Kannur's course is also a three-day stay.
What are the pre-marriage course dates in Kerala in 2026?
Each diocese sets its own. The Diocese of Mananthavady runs one almost every month, with December 2026 batches on 11-13 December and 19-21 December at Manimooly. The Diocese of Kannur lists a course on 6 December 2026 at IRC Pariyaram. Check your own diocese's Family Apostolate office for its dates.
Can I do the pre-marriage course online?
Some dioceses abroad have run it online. The Syro-Malabar eparchy in Australia ran an online course over Zoom in 2021, and the Malankara Orthodox Diocese of UK, Europe and Africa ran one-day online sessions in 2025-26. Ask the parish where you'll marry whether they'll accept an online course certificate before you sign up.
How long is the pre-marriage course certificate valid?
It depends on who issues it. The Syro-Malabar Australia certificate was valid for two years, and the Syro-Malankara Catholic certificate in North America for five. Ask your parish what it accepts if your course was some time ago.
What documents do I need for the pre-marriage course?
Usually a letter from your parish priest, or an application form signed and sealed by your vicar, plus a passport-size photo. Dioceses abroad may also ask for a copy of your passport. Bring what you need for a residential stay, such as bed sheets and toiletries.
Is there premarital counselling in Kerala for non-Christians?
Yes. Kerala's Department of Minority Welfare has sponsored premarital counselling programmes run through colleges, such as a free four-day course at MES Ponnani College in 2020-21 and a three-day programme at MES Kalladi College in January 2025. These were organised for students, and we couldn't confirm current public availability. Private counsellors are another option.
